Kalli Studio is based in Far North Queensland, where the rainforest meets the reef and the natural world offers an endless source of wonder. Our work is guided by the same sense that makes a child stop at the sight of a butterfly, capturing those fleeting moments before they vanish.
We focus on rare and endangered species of the rainforest, drawing attention to the fragile presence of creatures and plants such as gliders, cassowaries, glow worms, and native butterflies. We approach these subjects through a childlike sense of curiosity, where the natural world is experienced as something luminous, strange, and quietly magical.
We offer original paintings and fine art prints created with Chinese pigments on cotton paper. The medium allows for layered, tactile surfaces that bring a distinct material presence to depictions of rainforest animals, with soft detail in textures such as fur and feather, and a warmth and depth that sets the work apart from more conventional watercolour or digital illustration.
Our art brings together Eastern and Western approaches to image-making. Chinese pigments carry a long history of Eastern artistic tradition, while cotton paper and contemporary tools situate the work within a Western illustrative context, creating a visual language that is uniquely our own.
Our current exhibition, Beneath Butterfly Wings, explores the hidden lives of rare rainforest species through fleeting moments of encounter – what is seen, sensed, and quickly lost within fragile ecosystems – to build awareness of these creatures and their preservation.
“Will You Play With Me?” is an upcoming children’s book by Gigi Stella that follows Ully, a newly emerged Ulysses butterfly, as she takes her first journey through the forests and gardens of tropical Australia. Moving from leaf to creature to flower, she meets the world for the first time, asking each encounter the same hopeful question: “Will you play with me?”
